Our Mission

We believe God is calling us to be intentionally missional in four areas:

AT-RISK YOUTH and THEIR FAMILIES

WORKING POOR and HOMELESS PERSONS

CONGREGATIONAL CARE and ENRICHMENT

INTERFAITH ACTION for SOCIAL PROGRESS

If you feel called to invest yourself with us in one of these goals, or just want more information, please contact the office at (434) 293-3311 or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Mission Statement

St. Mark Lutheran Church is a people created by God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, called and sent to bear witness to God's creative, redeeming and sanctifying activity in the world.

As a community of Christ, we are called not only to minister within our congregation but also to minister outside our congregation. Our mission activity is evident in many ways, including

St. Mark Preschool
Campus Ministry
Serving meals at the Salvation Army
A Partner in PACEM
Prayer Quilt & Shawl Ministry

and the open use of our building by many community groups. To emphasize mission the Congregation Council has developed the following statement to be used by committees and the Council in developing goals and objectives:

St. Mark Lutheran Church, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone, is a people called by God to be servants of all people; to experience God's saving grace through faith; to come together as the body of Christ in worship and celebration of the gifts of God; and to reach out to those outside the church with witness to the loving grace of God through Christ Jesus. To answer this call, our mission will include reaching out to and beyond the members of St. Mark.

Worship

A noted theologian has said: "If you want to know what Lutherans are like, worship with them." That is excellent advice! At St. Mark we invite you to join us in all our worship opportunities. Traditional Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday, and uses both the Lutheran Book of Worship and alternative musical settings.

We are a congregation that worships! Please take a look at our schedule of services and come get to know us!

Fun, Friends, & Fellowship

Worship is an important and primary reason for a church to exist, but enjoying the fellowship of others enriches our lives as well. St. Mark offers many social opportunties, and everyone is invited to participate.

Soup Suppers
Congregation Picnics
Progressive Dinners
Advent Wreath Making
Sunday Coffe Fellowship
Evening Prayer in Advent and Lent

We hope you will join our St. Mark family in some (or all!) of these activities. Keep your eye on the Crossmarks Newsletter or call the church office at (434) 293-3311 for information.

Education

Our Christian education programs are designed to help those who do not know God-in-Christ to know him, and to nurture the faith of those who do. These include traditional programs:

Sunday Church School for all ages
Communion instruction for youth
Confirmation for youth and adults
Midweek Bible Study
Women's Book Club
A lively Youth Group

The women of St. Mark meet monthly as Circle I for study and fellowship.

St. Mark is especially pleased with its Preschool for the education of pre-kindergarten youngsters in a Christian environment.

Please come join us in these educational opportunities!
